Erv Rough, Pressroom Manager, is in his thirty-first year of press
operations at Press Enterprise. “When I started here, it was a letterpress
operation,” he says. “Since then, we’ve moved to offset
and now to heat set. It’s an exciting time for our group, and the
new technology should show tremendous value to our customers.”
The department, staffed by some 30 pressmen and supervisors, runs 24 hours
a day, every day of the year.
“We’re closely in synch with the customer service people,”
Rough says. “Our responsibility is to manage job scheduling in a
way that keeps customers happy while optimizing press usage. It’s
a big challenge for our shift supervisors, who do an excellent job of
keeping the work flowing smoothly.”
Installing the heat set equipment - a four-month project - kept the department
busy in 2002. With the installation and training now complete, the new
presses are up and running at full capacity.
“The new equipment is a real asset,” says Rough, “but
our real strength is in our people. We compete against printing companies
much larger than ours, and we’ve had tremendous success over the
years. Our customers know they can count on us, and that’s all the
competitive edge we need.”
